with gameplay similar to Metroid, but without the same brilliance.

Performance issues, and simplistic level layouts don't do the license justice
I think you'd have to be a true fan of Overlord to persevere with this one as performance, at least on the Switch is very poor to the point the game is almost constantly lagging, even causing visual glitches with the platforms, which should be solid objects, often appearing to have gaps between the pieces that make them up while moving.
It's difficult to understand why the performance is so poor, because visually this is ordinary at best, with levels consisting only basic shapes, and the same few objects.
There's probably some decent 'Metroidvania' gameplay in here if you can look past all that, but we're spoiled for choice on the platform, so unless you're a fan of Overlord I'd recommend looking at some of the more polished entries in the genre before diving into this one.

Great Addition To Metroidvania Gameplay Genre
The game gives a great mix of gameplay and exploration as you traverse through the levels with the intention of not only escaping the situation you find yourself in but also to find your memories and find the truth of why you're in this dilemma in the first place. The mechanics and levels are great as while you push your way through each level and gain both new abilities but also restored memories you have fun doing so. The graphics are a great love letter to the classic style of the 16-Bit to 32-Bit games from yesteryear and while the price isn't cheap it's definitely a lot more affordable here then what game scalpers are asking for on the NA sites.

As someone who doesnt know anything about Overlord, the game was fun albeit a bit forgettable, in my opinion.
However, I could not help but feel that fans of the series would get a bit more enjoyment out of this title than I did.
